INFO:A soft-legged midfielder, as it was fashionable in those times, and who today we would call a midfielder, with good technique and a lot of skill. Brave, racial midfielder with a lot of craft. He distributed "tow" if he came up, but he also moved the ball with criteria. With the stripes of a leader, respected by his teammates and feared by his opponents. Jaén was hard, performed as well in midfield as embedded in the axis of the defense, he was one of those in charge of marking Johan Cruyff in the Dutchman's debut in La Liga. The player or the ball passes, but not the two together". He took it literally and turned his craft into an art. Preventing goals was his main function, although Rafael Jaén knew how to do more in the position that in his time was generically called a midfielder and now they call a defensive pivot.
He was a consummate specialist in taking penalties, almost always low, almost always crossed and placed at the post, at the corner of the iron supporting that.
He competed in the men's tournament at the 1968 Summer Olympics. With the senior team (although he did not make his debut) he was at the Bernabéu against Italy (2-2, in February 1970).
