De Sanctis is a former goalkeeper. He had his best time at Udinese, where he made 230 appearances from 1999 to 2007. He then had excellent seasons at Napoli, playing 175 matches from 2009 to 2013. He played also for Pescara, Juventus, Sevilla, Galatasaray, Roma and Monaco, where he retired in 2017. He capped for Italy 6 times.
Often considered as the best alternative to Gianluigi Buffon and Francesco Toldo in Italy national team squad during his time at Udinese, De Sanctis was a charismatic and commanding goalkeeper, a leader who constantly shouted to his defenders. He was distinguished for his excellent reflexes, shot stopping ability even against powerful attempts from long range, and efficiency one-on-one as he could rush off his goal at good speed in order to deflect a shot or anticipate an opponent. He would even leave his own area to make a clearance with the head if necessary. He had excellent reflexes, remarkable jump, good positioning, handling of the ball and was a fine penalty saver. He possessed solid technique as he sometimes saved shots with his feet. Very reliable in his best days, he was though criticized at times for showing insecurities and making avoidable mistakes. During his stint at Napoli, he initially showed several insecurities but he soon became a reliable first choice. While he still had some flaws every now and then, he beat in the 2010-11 season Napoli's clean sheet record which was previously held by Luciano Castellini. Excellent as always one-on-one, he was though more prone to leave his area to push the ball away. Also, he improved his technical skills as he saved the ball with his feet more often and his goal kicks seemed more accurate.
