At AIK he broke through as a left back (from 1935 he played mostly as a center back) and soon became captain of the team. Here he remained a diamond in the rough, both on and off the field, throughout his career. Andersson did not prosper in the upper echelons of life, but he took his responsibility as captain of the AIK team (and later the national team) with great seriousness and dignity. He spent most of his club career at AIK, where he became Swedish champion in 1932 and 1937.
Andersson was also selected in the Swedish team for the 1934 World Cup, where he played in both matches for Sweden when they lost to Germany in the quarterfinals. He played a total of 27 international soccer matches between 1930 and 1938, scoring 3 goals.
Andersson was also a skilled bandy goalkeeper at AIK , with a gold medal in the Swedish championship in 1931.
After his active career, Andersson was coach of Vasalunds IF .
- Sven Andersson had a will of steel and “concrete” in his muscles that pooled all the power to stop opponents. Successful clearances were a natural part of his game, but he was also a reliable penalty taker.
- “Svenne Vrålis” got his nickname when, as a fullback, he would clear balls from opponents to the warning cry, ‘Get out of the way because now it's going to blow up!’.
- Andersson began his soccer career at Hagalunds IS, where he earned respect for his relentless will and fighting spirit, combined with a poise that made opponents turn pale and become a little more cautious.
- In total, Andersson played 235 games in the Swedish top league. He scored 28 goals. He was Swedish champion in 1932 and 1937. In 1940 he ended his playing career.
Quote:
His long-time teammate Erik Almgren had this to say about Andersson: “Many people seem to have the impression that Svenne played unfairly. I have played hundreds of games with Sven Andersson and have seen him play him in the most fabulous way, but not once did he intentionally try to hurt an opponent. Svenne was strong and tough, but he was tougher on himself. He gave his all in every situation. That encouraged his teammates to do the same.”
