Just like Léo Moura on the right, Juan was a key figure in the left side supporting Flamengo offensive moves down the flanks in the latter half of the 2000s. Fast, impetuous, and precise in his passes and crosses, he was one of players with the most assists between 2006 and 2010. He won the 2006 Brazil Cup, the state championship three-peat in 2007/08/09, and the 2009 Brazilian Championship, although he missed about half of the season due to a knee injury.

The peak of his career was in the year of 2008, when he was called by the coach Dunga for the Brazilian National Team for games against Chile and Bolivia in the 2010 World Cup Qualifiers. In the same year he was awarded the Bola de Prata (Silver Ball) by Placar Magazine as the best left-back of the season.
