Cheick Tioté was an Ivorian defensive midfielder of great physical intensity, combativeness and dedication, who stood out for his remarkable spell at FC Twente, shone in the Premier League with Newcastle and was an important player for the Ivory Coast national team. Trained in Belgium, he arrived at Twente in 2008, where he quickly established himself as a regular in the midfield of the team that won the Eredivisie title for the first time in 2009–10. At the Dutch club, Tioté attracted attention for his strength in tackling, defensive coverage and tireless physical presence, being the “engine” of the team coached by Steve McClaren.

In 2010, he transferred to Newcastle United, where he became a fan favorite with his intense and fierce performances. His combative style, firm marking and leadership spirit made him one of the most respected players in the squad. He became famous for a legendary goal against Arsenal in 2011, when he scored the equalizer from outside the box in a historic 4-4 draw, establishing himself among fans as a symbol of grit and dedication. He spent seven years at the English club, always recognized for his dedication, despite having to deal with a few injuries and suspensions.

He was a constant presence for the Ivory Coast national team for almost a decade, participating in World Cups and several editions of the African Cup of Nations. He was part of the team that won the 2015 African Cup of Nations, being one of the pillars of the midfield in the Ivorian golden generation alongside Yaya Touré.

Cheick Tioté tragically passed away in 2017, at the age of 30, after suffering a cardiac arrest in training, where he was playing for Beijing Enterprises, in China. His untimely death shocked the world of football.
