Born in the town of Goor, near Enschede, Karnebeek was yet another example of the bond between Twente and its local talent, joining a lineage of players formed within the regionalist spirit of the Tukkers. Having played professionally between the late 1980s and early 2000s, Karnebeek played mainly as a left-back, but could also play as a cernter-back when necessary. His style of play was marked by good positioning, anticipation and tactical obedience. He was never a player with great offensive strength or speed, but he made up for it with his reading of the game, discipline and defensive stability. He was the type of player who rarely drew attention in the spotlight, but who coaches valued for his consistency and low error rate. Karnebeek made 322 appearances for Twente, making him one of the club's record appearance holders and a highly respected name within the club. He lived through the team's ups and downs in the 1990s, but was always a reliable presence, especially in the more stable Eredivisie seasons. He later ended his career with brief spells at Dunfermline Athletic in Scotland in 2002/03 and De Graafschap in 2003-05.
