Paul Hegarty was Dundee United's greatest captain. He led the team through their golden era, winning the league title, reaching the semi finals of the European Cup and the final of the UEFA Cup. Hegarty started his United career as a striker, but after moving to centre back he formed a fantastic partnership with David Narey, one of the strongest in Scottish football history. He never lost his scoring touch, being a regular scorer from defence and is United's 2nd top European scorer. He was an excellent marker, very responsive with great timing on his tackles, and very good in the air. His usefulness at both ends of the pitch, consistency and leadership carried United through many European ties and he is one of the club's greatest legends. In 15 years he played 687 games for the club. He only earned 8 caps for Scotland, a low number for his quality, but his competition was very strong at that time.
