INFO:
The Washington Darts were formed in 1967. They played three ASL seasons before joining the NASL where they played in 1970 and 1971. Then, they relocated to Miami and were rebranded Miami Gatos for the 1972 NASL season. They changed name to Miami Toros in 1973 and Fort Lauderdale Strikers in 1976. Still members of the NASL, they played in the American top tier league under the Fort Lauderdale name until 1983.
In 1984, two new teams were formed: the Fort Lauderdale Sun as a second division team and the Minnesota Strikers as a NASL team. One year later, the Fort Lauderdale Sun changed name to South Florida Sun but folded at the end of the season; the Minnesota Strikers became an indoor-only team.
In 1988, the Minnesota Strikers relocated to Miami to form a new iteration of the Fort Lauderdale Strikers. The same year, an Orlando based team was founded: the Orlando Lions. Following three seasons in the ASL between 1988 and 1990, the Lions merged with the Strikers but were formed again in 1992.
The Fort Lauderdale Strikers continued playing in the ASL, which was the de facto top tier league in the USA before the MLS was established. The Strikers folded in 1994 but were immediately founded back, though as a second division team. The new iteration lasted until 1997.
In 2006, a team named Miami FC was founded and played in the USL, the American second tier division until 2010 when the name Fort Lauderdale Strikers was brought back. The USL also changed name to NASL where the Strikers played until 2016.
Another Miami based team existed from 1997 to January 2002 and spent four seasons in the MLS: Miami Fusion. The Fusion can be considered a successor to the original Fort Lauderdale Strikers and a predecessor to Miami FC. However, Miami Fusion, alongside the Miami Sharks/Freedom that existed from 1988 to 1992, can also be considered a spiritual predecessor to Inter Miami that was formed in 2018, two years after the last iteration of the Fort Lauderdale Strikers dissolved. If we are to consider Miami Fusion both a successor to the original Fort Lauderdale Strikers and a predecessor to Inter Miami, that would make Inter Miami as well a spiritual successor to the Fort Lauderdale Strikers.
