Prandelli was a defensive midfielder. His career began in 1974 at Cremonese, where he played 89 matches and scored 4 goals in four seasons. He joined Atalanta in 1978 and played 31 games, scoring once, but left after only a single year for Juventus. With the Bianconeri, he was mainly a substitute but still played 141 times and scored twice until 1985, when he came back to Atalanta. He played 126 more matches with the Neroazzurri and scored 2 goals. He retired in 1990.
Prandelli was a good midfielder, gifted with great determination, fine technique and speed. He was mainly focused on the defensive phase and rarely advanced to try the shot ─ even though his kick had good power ─ preferring to play the ball for his teammates. He was right-footed and was accurate with either short or long passes. When he was a footballer he was called Claudio but when he became a coach, he was then called Cesare.
